On October 1, 2020, SeamlessMD's CEO, Dr. Joshua Liu & Marketing colleague, Alan Sardana, were honored to participate in CAN Health Network's 1st Annual General Meeting (AGM) co-hosted by Deloitte. The Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network provides Canadian health innovation companies with an integrated and receptive marketplace by removing the most common access barriers that prevent businesses from growing and scaling to their full potential.
The event was an energizing and immersive 3-hour virtual experience with industry-led workshops, engaging talks, and network opportunities with prominent Canadian healthcare influencers.
To kick-off the meeting, keynote speakers including former Canadian Ambassador to the United States of America, David MacNaughton, Terry Fox's brother, Fred Fox, and Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, the honorable Mary Ng, MP, shared messages of collaboration, hope, and optimism for the new healthcare economy.
Minister Ng, MP, shared, “Trillium Health Partners is a great example, having implemented SeamlessMD to support patients during this critical time. This will ensure that patients have access to healthcare through this virtual care platform."
SeamlessMD's CEO, Dr. Joshua Liu, participated in the CEO roundtable which focused on the modernization and monetization of the Canadian healthcare system. He spoke about how in contrast to the U.S. healthcare market, Canada's lack of free-market competition and increased collaboration between healthcare organizations positions us well to build and commercialize next-generation, AI/ML-based healthcare technologies, that leverage combined data sets across the country's healthcare systems. As an example, Dr. Liu shared the Digital Technology Supercluster being led by SeamlessMD which combines Digital Patient Engagement and Machine Learning to deliver safer care during surgery and already involves a partnership with CAN Health Network members such as Trillium Health Partners, Sinai Health System, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and Unity Health.
In a separate breakout session, SeamlessMD's Alan Sardana co-hosted teh session which focused on "Visualizing Success: Breaking Through Barriers to Scale Technology". Click here for a copy of the presentation deck from that session.
In the session, Alan discussed 3 challenges Canadian healthcare technology startups face:
- 1. Remaining nimble: How a team must adapt to solve problems.
- 2. Balancing sound research with rapid iteration: Why software is unique compared to analog products such as medical devices because it requires both clinical evidence to ensure patient safety and rapid iteration for ongoing success.
- 3. Designing for end-user/patient adoption: Why designing for the end-user and focusing on implementation is paramount to ensure your product is being used effectively.
To close the session, Alan shared a commercialization success story, highlighting the Sunnybrook Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre's success with SeamlessMD and key strategies to mitigate the aforementioned barriers.
All in all, CAN Health Network's 1st Annual General Meeting proved to be a progressive, thought-provoking, community-building success and SeamlessMD was grateful for the opportunity to participate alongside CAN Health Network, Deloitte, and the fantastic network brought together for this experience.
