We are proud to announce that our very own Dr. Joshua Liu, Co-founder and CEO at SeamlessMD, has received recognition as the 2021 Digital Health Executive of the Year by Digital Health Canada. This prestigious award is presented to individuals “whose outstanding contributions as a leader have helped advance Digital Health or Virtual Health in Canada.”
Dr. Liu’s journey into the realm of patient care began during his medical training where he co-led a research project on hospital readmissions and participated in UHN’s physician advisory group for post-hospital discharge follow-up. It was through this experience that Dr. Liu was inspired to explore the potential of leveraging technology to engage, monitor, and stay connected with patients to prevent adverse outcomes such as readmissions. Thus, after graduating from the University of Toronto with his MD and completing his medical training, Dr. Liu co-founded SeamlessMD and has grown the company to be one of the world’s leading Digital Patient Engagement and Remote Monitoring platforms.
With the technology, patients access digital care plans on their smartphone, tablet or computer and are guided through journeys such as surgery, cancer care and COVID-19 monitoring. Meanwhile, providers can receive alerts and monitor patients on dashboards to catch problems earlier.
Today, SeamlessMD is used by hospitals and health systems across Canada and the United States to deliver virtual care for a wide variety of patients. SeamlessMD is the only Canadian company on OTN’s Vendor of Record for Virtual Surgical Transition Solutions and is a pre-qualified vendor by Canada Health Infoway for RPM solutions. Furthermore, over 25 academic studies have shown SeamlessMD to reduce hospital length of stay by 1-2 days, readmissions by 72%, ER visits by 47% and hospital costs by $1,000-$2,000 per patient. Dr. Liu’s leadership has undoubtedly helped patients across North America receive better healthcare and as a result, SeamlessMD has been recognized as a leading Digital Health company, such as being named by OMERS as a Top 100 Canadian Health Tech Company and one of the Global Top 100 Companies in Digital Health.
After the inception of SeamlessMD, Dr. Liu consistently demonstrated leadership within healthcare innovation; he served as Chair of the Joule Innovation Council for the Canadian Medical Association and on the Advisory Group to the Office of the Chief Health Innovation Strategist for the Ontario Ministry of Health. He has also served on the Shad Valley Board of Directors and as a Startup Advisor to Northeastern University.
As a physician turned entrepreneur, Dr. Liu is regularly invited to speak about Digital Health to healthcare administrators, clinicians, students and industry professionals to provide insight from his unique perspective. Most recently, in 2021, Dr. Liu’s leadership in Digital Health was recognized by Epic, the largest EHR vendor. Dr. Liu put Canadian Digital Health on the global stage when he was invited by Epic to present at their 2021 annual conference on how SeamlessMD has delivered Epic & MyChart-integrated Patient Engagement & Remote Monitoring solutions.
Currently. Dr. Liu co-hosts the SeamlessMD Podcast to promote Digital Health, which has released 50 episodes since being launched during COVID-19. The podcast features engaging discussions with clinicians, hospital executives and industry leaders on how Digital Health is transforming healthcare. Past guests Dr. Liu has interviewed on the podcast include Dr. Carmine Simone (VP Clinical Programs, Michael Garron Hospital), Caroline Fanti (Director of Surgical Services, Thunder Bay Regional), Dr. Jay Shah (Vice Chief of Staff, Stanford Health Care) and Jason Burum (VP, Patient Engagement at Wolters Kluwer Health).
